Live – Epigenetics & the Mind Brain Gene Connection: A Systems Approach to Mental Health

Live – Epigenetics & the Mind Brain Gene Connection: A Systems Approach to Mental Health

Every few years a seemingly new psychotherapeutic approach surges in popularity, only to fade away later as a distant memory. Recently, a wide variety of interactive factors underlying many health and mental health problems have been identified. This seminar synthesizes the substantial literature on metabolism, psychoneuroimmunology and epigenetics, combining it with the neuroscience of emotional, interpersonal, cognitive, and psychodynamic psychotherapeutic approaches to offer an integrated vision of psychotherapy. The integrative model promotes a conceptual shift in how we understand mental health problems and their solutions. We can now understand how metabolism, gene expression, immune system, diet, brain structure, and even gut bacteria effect mental health. Psychotherapists in the 21st Century will by necessity become more like healthcare workers to address and resolve adverse mind-body-brain interactions. Dr. Arden will cover concepts to include:

  • The relationship between mental health and gene expression, including the interaction between the metabolism, immune system, genes, brain dynamics, and mental health.
  • How the pandemic of obesity and autoimmune disorders involves chronic inflammation and various mental health disorders.
  • How early adverse experiences can effect long-term health.
  • How genes can be expressed or suppressed and how stress systems can be turned on and are difficult to turn off epigenetically.
  • How the immune system and metabolism are intricately connected to brain systems.
  • How chronic and acute stress can dysregulate the immune system and how autoimmune disorders contribute to depression, anxiety, and cognitive problems.

Live Event – “Out of It”: Trauma-Related Dissociation & Powerful Tools to Promote Reconnection

Live Event – “Out of It”: Trauma-Related Dissociation & Powerful Tools to Promote Reconnection

Many trauma courses touch on dissociation as a symptom, but very few trainings dive into dissociation as its own phenomenon, exploring its common presentations, various drivers, and targeted interventions. Dissociation is mysterious, and working with it can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be with the right training and practice!

Therapists can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the challenges and confusing presentations of clients who experience trauma-related dissociation, ranging from symptoms to disorders. This highly practical workshop will offer in-depth skills to assess and work with trauma-related dissociation. We will explore four types of phenomena that are included under the umbrella of dissociation, their different symptom presentations, and their different treatments. An emphasis will be placed on what has been called “structural dissociation,” that is, dissociation of the sense of self that results in aspects or parts of self that have undue separation and results in ongoing lack of voluntary awareness and control. This phenomenon is found in a range of trauma-related disorders, from complex PTSD to Dissociative Identity Disorder. Participants will learn strategies for assessment, including specific ways to ask about dissociation. Then we will explore the inner world of dissociative aspects of self and their functions, how they differ from normal ego states, why they remain overly separate, and how to promote gradual integration through the use of therapeutic process, a collaborative therapeutic relationship, and a number of specific techniques. Trauma-related conflicts and phobic avoidance, especially the phobia of inner experience (e.g., thoughts, emotions, sensations, memories, wishes, needs), will be addressed, and their treatment will be described as a central part of therapy.

Live – Relationship Therapy Toolbox: Popular Empirical Skills to Transform Partnerships

Live – Relationship Therapy Toolbox: Popular Empirical Skills to Transform Partnerships

Clinical research in the area of relationships and couples therapy has come a long way in the last 50 years, with findings galore, absolutely ripe for integration into work with dyads and individuals alike. Although there exists prescriptive couples techniques developed by famous trainers over the years, comparatively little has been done to synthesize these findings and compile them into a helpful “toolbox” of techniques we can use to leverage these findings in our relationships work. In fact, very few trainings exist today that give clinicians helpful, skills-based, culturally adapted, and modern couples and relationships instruction based on a rich amalgamation of these 5+ decades of empirical research. Join Dr. Corey Petersen as she bridges this gap with you over two days of groundbreaking skills-based couples and relationships training, relevant for those who treat both couples and individuals with relationship issues. She’ll address the most common and destructive sources of relationship conflict and deliver actionable therapy tools that promote staying power and buffer against recurrent negative dynamics.

This workshop provides a unique and comprehensive introduction to couples therapy. Interwoven with influential relational models, clinicians will acquire practical tools and techniques to help couples build stronger, more fulfilling relationships. Attendees will learn how to apply these principles and techniques in their clinical practice, with an emphasis on assisting couples in improving their communication skills and deepening their emotional connection. The course will cover various topics, including intimacy, conflict, boundaries, and more. Through case studies, research, and activities, clinicians will be equipped with a comprehensive toolbox of knowledge and strategies to facilitate meaningful change and promote healthy, thriving relationships for their clients.

Live Event – Borderline Personality Disorder: Breakthrough Tools for the “Untreatable”

Live Event – Borderline Personality Disorder: Breakthrough Tools for the “Untreatable”

Individuals with borderline personality disorder have long been considered the most challenging clients presenting in the clinical setting. Many professionals continue to view them as “untreatable.” Emerging research suggests this is simply not the case. DBT has paved the way in pioneering new attitudes and outcomes when working with this population. Most practitioners are trained in dialectical behavior therapy. However, DBT is only one of several empirically supported treatments for BPD. Thus, psychologists and other clinical mental health practitioners are now able to bring a more complex, integrative approach to bear on this once heavily stigmatized disorder (or set of cluster B features). This 6 hour training will give you an in-depth understanding of BPD, help you make and have a conversation about the diagnosis in a way that minimizes client resistance and enhances motivation, and it will offer practical, evidence-based treatment strategies that actually work. Leave this in-depth Diagnosis and Treatment seminar with a comprehensive knowledge of a condition that was once considered untreatable. Take away a broad repertoire of tools to add to your toolbox to assess, diagnosis, and compassionately treat this population and help them discover their own life worth living.

Cognitive Processing Therapy: Learn it Step-By-Step!

Cognitive Processing Therapy: Learn it Step-By-Step!

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) has long been recognized as an evidence-based therapy for the treatment of psychological trauma, and has even been declared a “best practice” for the treatment of PTSD by the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies. However, CPT training is difficult to obtain outside of an agency setting, which limits many clinicians’ trauma treatment skillset. This two-day training introduces attendees to CPT, step-by-step, teaching each of the 12 CPT sessions. The cognitive skills taught in CPT, both alone and when integrated with other trauma treatment approaches, can facilitate fast recovery in some of your most traumatized clients. Don’t miss this rare training opportunity!
