Live – Somatic Sex Therapy: Using Psychophysiology to Create Pleasure & Connection

Live – Somatic Sex Therapy: Using Psychophysiology to Create Pleasure & Connection

Sex is almost always a physical act, so why would we not use the body as a resource for better understanding our clients’ experiences? This course draws on many of the main principles in somatic psychology including polyvagal theory, attachment theory, narrative and art therapy, the Braddock Body Process, integrative trauma and PTSD therapies, and the instructor’s own research into embodied healing for survivors of sexual trauma. It will address somatic memory and holding, as well as ways to reframe and replace dysfunctional psychosomatic patterns with integrated alternatives.

Understanding how the brain and body work together—not focusing on one over the other—informs effective somatic sex therapy interventions. Somatic techniques are most often used as an addition to, rather than a replacement for, traditional sex therapy methodology. Somatic techniques inherently offer titrated pacing and client-lead initiatives, moving clients toward states of embodiment and empowerment and creating an ideal foundation for holistic sexual health.

Epigenetics & the Mind Brain Gene Connection: A Systems Approach to Mental Health

Epigenetics & the Mind Brain Gene Connection: A Systems Approach to Mental Health

Every few years a seemingly new psychotherapeutic approach surges in popularity, only to fade away later as a distant memory. Recently, a wide variety of interactive factors underlying many health and mental health problems have been identified. This seminar synthesizes the substantial literature on metabolism, psychoneuroimmunology and epigenetics, combining it with the neuroscience of emotional, interpersonal, cognitive, and psychodynamic psychotherapeutic approaches to offer an integrated vision of psychotherapy. The integrative model promotes a conceptual shift in how we understand mental health problems and their solutions. We can now understand how metabolism, gene expression, immune system, diet, brain structure, and even gut bacteria effect mental health. Psychotherapists in the 21st Century will by necessity become more like healthcare workers to address and resolve adverse mind-body-brain interactions. Dr. Arden will cover concepts to include:

  • The relationship between mental health and gene expression, including the interaction between the metabolism, immune system, genes, brain dynamics, and mental health.
  • How the pandemic of obesity and autoimmune disorders involves chronic inflammation and various mental health disorders.
  • How early adverse experiences can effect long-term health.
  • How genes can be expressed or suppressed and how stress systems can be turned on and are difficult to turn off epigenetically.
  • How the immune system and metabolism are intricately connected to brain systems.
  • How chronic and acute stress can dysregulate the immune system and how autoimmune disorders contribute to depression, anxiety, and cognitive problems.

NDIT Module 1 Deep Dive: Skills to Activate Mirror Neurons & Build the Alliance

NDIT Module 1 Deep Dive: Skills to Activate Mirror Neurons & Build the Alliance

Decades of research have concluded that the therapeutic alliance is the most important component of effective therapy. However, few courses teach practical skills for improving the client-therapist alliance. This seminar, which is a deep dive into NDIT Module 1, teaches clinicians ways to strengthen their connection to clients, especially those with personality disorder traits. No previous NDIT training is required for this course, but completion of this course counts toward NDIT certification (which will be offered starting late 2024).

Live – “Felt Sense” Polyvagal Model: Re-envisioning Trauma & Addiction Treatment

Live – “Felt Sense” Polyvagal Model: Re-envisioning Trauma & Addiction Treatment

Our current brain disease model of trauma and addiction desperately needs a fresh approach, one that honors the wisdom of the body. The Felt Sense Polyvagal Model™ (FSPM) shifts the current pathologizing paradigm to a strengths-based approach. Through the lens of Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal theory, trauma and addiction is seen as an adaptive stress response in our autonomic nervous system. Trauma/addictive behaviors are the body’s attempt to emotionally regulate by acting as propellers that facilitate neurophysiological shifts in our nervous system. The “Felt Sense” model integrates Porges’ Polyvagal theory and Gendlin’s “Felt Sense” enabling us to appreciate these behaviors as adaptive responses in maladaptive environments.

This live webinar training provides an overview of Jan Winhall’s recent best-selling book “Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model,” Routledge, 2021. She will discuss the development of the model over forty years of clinical practice. Gain full clinical understanding of the FSPM theoretical framework, as well as an introduction to the Embodied Assessment and Treatment Tool™ and Carnes’ Four Circle Harm Reduction Practice. Participants will also learn and about Gendlin’s Focusing/Felt Sense somatic practice.

The FSPM provides a foundational framework that offers a clear and powerful way to integrate embodiment into practice. Clinicians can integrate therapeutic modalities including: Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing, Sensory Motor Psychotherapy, DBT, CBT, Interpersonal Neurobiology and more. A mixture of didactic information, experiential practices, demonstrations, and case examples will guide the clinician in applying the model. Downloads including the client and clinician FSPM graphic models, Body Cards, Four Circles, and more are available for the workshop on my website. http://janwinhall.com. Students need a journal and crayons. This course will be informative for those new to the field of trauma/addiction as well as seasoned practitioners.
