We are beginning to see in the field that addictions are trauma rooted, but that trauma is seldom limited to the individual who struggles. Not infrequently, it is generational and the role that the addict has played in the family has served to continue the family trauma. Addiction is indeed a family disease and we will journey into the family dynamics to look at how to support individuals struggling with addiction in a way that will increase the odds for long term recovery and family healing.

Objectives:

This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:

a). Identify and state how trauma underlies addiction and use tools to assist in long term recovery.

b). Identify and state how trauma creates family roles that continue the addictive family process.

c). Name, understand, and implement change in the various family roles that individuals conform to.

d). Identify and explain family resistance in the context of addiction treatment.

e). Understand and implement healthy boundary training in the recovery of all family components.

f). Explain the difference, in family terms, between recovery and “returning to normal”.

Mental Health Clinicians & Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, Marriage & Family Therapists, Counselors, School Personnel, Youth Development Workers, Healthcare Workers.

Robert Cox is an LPC in the state of Missouri and the president-elect of the American Counseling Association of Missouri. He owns a mental health practice, Life Recovery Consulting, with offices in Richmond and Liberty, MO. Robert is the author of the book, “The Life Recovery Method: Autism Treatment From a Trauma Perspective” and he specializes in Trauma with focuses in addiction and autism. Robert lectures frequently on regional and national levels about the issues of trauma, attachment and connection.
