Date course created: March 2024
While many therapy training seminars discuss ways to regulate the nervous system, few address this topic from a developmental trauma perspective. Although for many clients lowering the stress response in the body and brain will feel relieving, trauma survivors can experience this nervous system shift as dangerous and painful. This seminar teaches clinicians how to help clients manage and reduce sympathetic nervous system arousal in the body without triggering a rebound effect, wherein a client experiences a sudden increase in physical stress in response to physiological relaxation. No previous NDIT training is required for this course, but completion of this course counts toward NDIT certification (which will be offered starting late 2024).
**This is a 2.5-CE noninteractive, self-paced online video course delivered in home study format via an industry-standard online learning platform**
Agenda:
0:00 – 0:30: Understanding the Autonomic Nervous System and the Fight or Flight Response
0:30 – 1:00: Delving into the Relaxation Response and Its Role in Homeostasis
1:00 – 1:30: A Close Look at Stress and Survival Responses in our Daily Lives
1:30 – 2:15: Techniques for Self-Regulation – Exploring Autogenic Training and its Benefits
2:15 – 2:30: The Science of Breath – Understanding Diaphragmatic Breathing and its Role in Activating the Vagus Nerve
Objectives:
This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:
a). After completing this training, participants will be able to explain how past survival responses, such as immobility and collapse, contribute to physiological rebounding during relaxation techniques.
b). After completing this training, participants will be able to name at least three approaches for helping clients reduce sympathetic arousal in a way that feels tolerable.
c). After completing this training, participants will be able to describe at-home techniques clients can integrate into their lives that promote relaxation without dissociation.
Target Audience:
The target audience for this event includes psychologists, social workers, counselors, MFT’s, psychiatrists and other clinical mental health professionals.
Instructional Level: Intermediate

Date course created: March 2024
Trauma survivors often experience a profound disconnect from their bodies, and this experiential avoidance can make trauma processing, and therapy more broadly, difficult to engage in. However, reconnecting (or connecting for the first time!) with the body can feel dangerous and scary, and it is common for clients to resist practices that create “felt sense.” This seminar, which is a deep dive into Module 2, demystifies experiential avoidance and helps clinicians learn how to take a titrated approach when helping clients connect to their bodies and emotions. No previous NDIT training is required for this course, but completion of this course counts toward NDIT certification (which will be offered starting late 2024).
**This is a 2.75-CE noninteractive, self-paced online video course delivered in home study format via an industry-standard online learning platform**
Agenda:
0:00 – 0:30: Introduction and Grounding Tips
0:30 – 1:00: Safe/Secure/Calm Body Scan
1:00 – 1:30: Titrating into Interoception
1:30 – 2:00: Breath Connection & Interoceptive Exposure
2:00 – 2:30: Reconnecting with the Self
2:30 – 2:45: Movement/Poses
Objectives:
This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:
a). After completing this training, participants will be able to describe the neural mechanisms of experiential avoidance.
b). After completing this training, participants will be able to describe what it means to take a titrated approach to body connection, so that felt sense is tolerable.
c). After completing this training, participants will be able to learn and practice at least three techniques that will gently and safely help clients reconnect to their bodies and emotions.

by John Arden, PhD, ABPP | Mar 6, 2024 | Uncategorized
Date course created: March 2024
Every few years a seemingly new psychotherapeutic approach surges in popularity, only to fade away later as a distant memory. Recently, a wide variety of interactive factors underlying many health and mental health problems have been identified. This seminar synthesizes the substantial literature on metabolism, psychoneuroimmunology and epigenetics, combining it with the neuroscience of emotional, interpersonal, cognitive, and psychodynamic psychotherapeutic approaches to offer an integrated vision of psychotherapy. The integrative model promotes a conceptual shift in how we understand mental health problems and their solutions. We can now understand how metabolism, gene expression, immune system, diet, brain structure, and even gut bacteria effect mental health. Psychotherapists in the 21st Century will by necessity become more like healthcare workers to address and resolve adverse mind-body-brain interactions. Dr. Arden will cover concepts to include:
- The relationship between mental health and gene expression, including the interaction between the metabolism, immune system, genes, brain dynamics, and mental health.
- How the pandemic of obesity and autoimmune disorders involves chronic inflammation and various mental health disorders.
- How early adverse experiences can effect long-term health.
- How genes can be expressed or suppressed and how stress systems can be turned on and are difficult to turn off epigenetically.
- How the immune system and metabolism are intricately connected to brain systems.
- How chronic and acute stress can dysregulate the immune system and how autoimmune disorders contribute to depression, anxiety, and cognitive problems.
**This is a 5.75-CE noninteractive, self-paced online video course delivered in home study format via an industry-standard online learning platform**
Agenda:
0:00 – 1:45 – Gene Expression
1:45 – 2:45 – Immune System
2:45 – 3:45 – ‘Social Self’
3:45 – 4:30 – Habit and Motivation
4:30 – 5:45 – Self Organization
Objectives:
This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:
a). After completing this training, participants will be able to contrast the overly compartmental field of psychotherapy of the 20th Century to the integrative vision of psychotherapy in the 21st Century.
b). After completing this training, participants will be able to learn and explain how poor health contributes to poor mental health as well as vice versa.
c). After completing this training, participants will be able to analyze and describe how an overactive immune system, dysregulated metabolism, and gene expression contributes to depression and anxiety.
d). After completing this training, participants will be able to when working with clients, learn where to encourage lifestyle changes that improve health and mental health.
e). After completing this training, participants will be able to learn and describe how poor sleep, diet, and lack of exercise contributes to changes in gene expression and metabolism, which all affect mental health.
f). After completing this training, participants will be able to learn and practice Mind-Brain and evidence-based therapy approaches with the most practical outcomes.
Target Audience:
The target audience for this event includes psychologists, social workers, counselors, MFT’s, psychiatrists and other clinical mental health professionals.
