Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping behavioral health, offering new possibilities for documentation support, diagnosing, clinical decision-making, and administrative efficiency. At the same time, the field is navigating unprecedented ethical questions about privacy, transparency, bias, professional identity, and the protection of client autonomy. Many professionals are experiencing psychological stress because of the increase of AI in daily life, as well as the ethical concerns of working within the framework of AI in behavioral health.
This training provides a grounded, clinician-centered exploration of how AI intersects with ethical practice, emphasizing both regulatory expectations and the lived experience of behavioral health professionals who are being asked to adapt to emerging technologies. An emphasis of intense respect for professionals grappling with these issues will be the center of training that will ideally empower professionals to navigate these ethical waters.
Through a blend of ethical frameworks, case examples, and reflective discussion, the workshop highlights the emotional and professional impact of AI on clinicians—addressing fears of role displacement, uncertainty about competence, and the need for organizational support as technology evolves.
In addition to the formal course objectives listed below, this training includes:

- A brief ethics review, focused on the importance of mandatory disclosure when reviewing the complexities of AI and to ensure the training meets requirements for licensing board ethics training.
- A discussion that focuses on the need to identify the generation that client is as well as the provider to support an overall mastery and understanding of not just AI, but technology in general.
- An opportunity to define your own ethical decision-making model and identify three points that should be part of every model when working with clients challenged by non-violent relationship conflict.

- Introductions and overview of objectives and timelines.
- General ethics review to provide the lens through which the training will be viewed.
- An overview of the psychological impact that the concept of AI has on clinicians and the need for organizational support as technology evolves.
- A review of strategies that support the professional to gain competence to utilize AI to increase efficiency in administrative areas so they can focus on connection with the client.
- Identify two intentional steps that organizations and supervisors can take to foster psychological safety and educate professionals about the use of AI. Ideally this will decrease intimidation and fear of the implementation of AI tools.
- A discussion of the need to identify and respect the generation of the professional and client in the ever-evolving world of technology.
- Create and apply an ethical decision-making model, that specifically addresses the use of AI in a psychologically safe environment.
- Apply knowledge learned in the course to case examples.
- Review Handout of Sample Documents, including the AI knowledge self-assessment checklist.
- Wrap-up Q&A, evaluation, and resource sharing.
Objectives:
This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:
After completing this training, participants will be able to explain the psychological impact of AI on behavioral health professionals—addressing fears of role displacement, uncertainty about competence, and the need for organizational support as technology evolves.
After completing this training, participants will be able to describe strategies that empower the behavioral health professional to feel supported and competent when adopting AI-assisted tools that will support efficiency to focus on client care and interface instead of administrative tasks.
After completing this training, participants will be able to identify at least two ways organizations and supervisors can foster psychological safety, provide training, and create shared expectations that reduce fear, uncertainty, and role-threat among clinicians.
After completing this training, participants will be able to apply an ethical decision-making framework to evaluate when and how AI tools can be used responsibly in clinical documentation and care.
