While procrastination can certainly be thought of as a ‘symptom’ of a broader attentional concern, its relatively common occurrence and complex interplay between behavior, cognition, and emotion demands that we approach it as a distinctive and singular mental health issue. Chronic procrastination goes beyond “laziness” and is often linked to anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and distorted thought patterns around self vs. other. Chronic procrastination can begin to compromise function in work, family, and academic domains when a person gets caught in procrastination’s nasty grip – the self-perpetuating cycles of avoidance and failure.

In this three-hour workshop, British Cognitive Behavior expert, professor, and clinician Dr. Windy Dryden will discuss procrastination and offer an attitude-based framework that helps therapists deal with this common client problem. He will also conduct a live demonstration with a volunteer willing to discuss a current personal issue that they wish to resolve concerning procrastination. Dr. Dryden will focus on demonstrating how to accurately assess when (and when not) to use these practical attitude-based strategies conceptualized as an antidote for active client procrastination.
