Introduction
Please join us for a training that equips clinicians to assess caregiver nervous system states and identify when caregiver dysregulation—not child behavior—is the primary barrier to therapeutic and educational progress. Participants learn to assist foster parents and caregivers to track their own autonomic shifts in real time, recognizing transitions from ventral vagal engagement into sympathetic activation or dorsal collapse during everyday caregiver moments.
The training emphasizes delivering true co-regulation interventions in session, moving beyond generic parenting advice to Polyvagal-informed clinical tools that shift state and restore connection. Special attention is given to the unique autonomic challenges faced by foster parents, kinship caregivers, and caregivers of children with complex behavioral needs, whose nervous systems are often chronically taxed. Through case-based practice, clinicians will learn to stabilize caregiver physiology, strengthen relational safety, and create conditions in which children can finally access regulation, learning, and therapeutic change.
In addition to the formal course objectives listed below, this training includes:

A brief review of best practices for serving caregivers and families in foster care or kinship placement systems, highlighting the nuanced ethical considerations required to provide safe, attuned, and responsible care.

An opportunity for learners to define their own ethical decision-making model and identify three points that should be part of every model when working with caregivers and children challenged by patterns of system dysregulation that result in safety risks.

An exploration of how gratitude practices, attention to glimmers versus triggers (Polyvagal Theory), and understanding co-regulation with children can collectively support and foster systemic healing.

Agenda:
- Review how to assess caregiver nervous systems states.
- Identify how to recognize when the caregiver dysregulation may be a primary barrier to a child’s therapeutic or educational progress.
- Review self-regulation identifies for caregivers to manage their own autonomic shifts.
- Identify and education caregivers on the three aspects of PVT: ventral vagal → sympathetic → dorsal vagal and how to manage them in challenging parenting moments.
- Role model self-care strategies for caregivers to support them in long term foster or kinship placement care.
- Focus on educational moments with evidence-based co-regulation intervention strategies that can be use in real time in moments of dysregulation with children.
- Review PVT-informed regulation and caregiver tools, not generic parenting tips.
- Design practical, intentional interventions that can be used in any setting to support dysregulation across the educational and/or family system.
- Address the reality and challenges of foster care and kinship caregivers, entrusted with the safety and well-being of children from diverse and complex behavioral backgrounds.
- Focus on identifying risk and necessary safety measures when complex behaviors may spin out of control.
- Assist learners to build a toolbox of coping skills and interventions to attend to their own nervous systems as a result of being chronically taxed in complex environments.
