Introduction
Trauma-holding parts rarely announce themselves in language first. They arrive as a tightening jaw, a collapsed chest, a leg that won’t stop bouncing — somatic signals that appear in session long before a client can name what’s happening internally. Clinicians trained in cognitively-oriented IFS often miss these openings or, worse, talk over them, keeping the work in narrative while the nervous system tells a different story.
This course integrates the IFS model with somatic tracking practices, teaching clinicians to locate parts in the body, follow physical sensation as the entry point to protective systems, and work with trauma that is held preverbally or beneath the reach of insight. Drawing on Somatic IFS practices — somatic awareness, conscious breathing, resonance, mindful movement — alongside polyvagal-informed pacing, this course addresses the practical mechanics of body-based parts work: how to invite somatic attention without flooding, how to titrate contact with exiles that live in the body, how to recognize when a physical symptom is a protector doing its job, and how to support somatic unburdening safely.
Special attention is given to trauma-specific complications, including dissociative disconnection from body awareness, parts that guard against embodiment itself, and the clinician’s own somatic resonance as clinical information. Participants will practice tracking techniques and leave with a clear protocol for deepening their existing IFS practice into the body.

Objectives:
This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:
After completing this training, participants will be able to describe the theoretical rationale for somatic approaches within the IFS model, including how trauma-related parts manifest in body sensation, posture, movement, and physiological state.
After completing this training, participants will be able to apply at least three somatic tracking techniques for locating and making contact with parts through body awareness, breath, and movement.
After completing this training, participants will be able to utilize titration and pendulation strategies to prevent flooding when working somatically with exiles and trauma-holding parts, including with clients who present with dissociation or restricted body awareness.
After completing this training, participants will be able to identify protective parts that resist embodiment and demonstrate a Self-led approach to befriending these protectors before deepening somatic work.
