NDIT Module 2 Deep Dive: Reconnecting After Chronic Dissociation & Restoring “Felt Sense”

Trauma survivors often experience a profound disconnect from their bodies, and this experiential avoidance can make trauma processing, and therapy more broadly, difficult to engage in. However, reconnecting (or connecting for the first time!) with the body can feel dangerous and scary, and it is common for clients to resist practices that create “felt sense.” This seminar, which is a deep dive into Module 2, demystifies experiential avoidance and helps clinicians learn how to take a titrated approach when helping clients connect to their bodies and emotions. No previous NDIT training is required for this course, but completion of this course counts toward NDIT certification (which will be offered starting late 2024).

Objectives:

This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:

a). After completing this training, participants will be able to describe the neural mechanisms of experiential avoidance.

b). After completing this training, participants will be able to describe what it means to take a titrated approach to body connection, so that felt sense is tolerable.

c). After completing this training, participants will be able to learn and practice at least three techniques that will gently and safely help clients reconnect to their bodies and emotions.

Target Audience:

The target audience for this event includes psychologists, social workers, counselors, MFT’s, psychiatrists and other clinical mental health professionals.

Originally trained as a neuroscientist, Dr. Jennifer Sweeton is a clinical and forensic psychologist, Amazon #1 best-selling author, and internationally-recognized expert on trauma, anxiety, and the neuroscience of mental health. She is the author of the book, Trauma Treatment Toolbox, published by PESI Publishing & Media. Dr. Sweeton completed her doctoral training at the Stanford University School of Medicine, the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, and the National Center for PTSD. Additionally, she holds a master’s degree in affective neuroscience from Stanford University, and studied behavioral genetics at Harvard University. She holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and is a former President of the Greater Kansas City Psychological Association.
