CE That Meets Georgia Requirements

If you’re a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Georgia, the requirements are:

A minimum of thirty-five (35) contact hours of continuing education (CE) is required every two years for license renewal (by September 30 of even-numbered years). Licensees initially licensed late in a biennial cycle may be exempt from CE for their first renewal.

At least five (5) contact hours of the thirty-five (35) must be devoted to professional ethics relating to counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy. Ethics hours must be obtained through synchronous (real-time) activities.

Of the remaining hours, at least fifteen (15) must be core hours in the practice of marriage and family therapy, and up to fifteen (15) hours may be related hours in allied professions. A maximum of ten (10) contact hours are allowable via asynchronous online or self-study methods.

Georgia LMFTs renew through the state’s GOALS licensing portal. Complete the online renewal application, satisfy the applicable CE requirements, pay the renewal fee, and verify afterward that the license expiration date has been updated.

Yes. As of January 1, 2026, Georgia licensees who are required to complete CE must register with CE Broker and record the continuing education being used for license renewal. The Board also strongly encourages uploading CE activities and certificates before submitting the renewal application.

Georgia LMFT licenses expire on September 30 of even-numbered years. A late-renewal period runs from October 1 through October 31; after October 31, the license must be reinstated, and a therapist may not practice on a lapsed license.

Georgia’s requirements depend on the applicant’s pathway. An applicant progressing from an active Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) license generally needs two years of post-master’s experience, at least 2,000 hours of direct clinical experience, and 100 hours of supervision; applicants entering through other master’s or doctoral pathways have different education, experience, supervision, and examination requirements.
