CE That Meets Indiana Requirements

If you’re a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Indiana, the requirements are:

Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) and Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselors (LCACs) in Indiana must complete 40 hours of continuing education every two years. If your license has been active less than 12 months, no CE is required. If active between 12–24 months, you must complete 20 CE hours.

Each renewal cycle must include at least six (6) hours in ethics, of which two (2) hours must be Category I ethics (live, interactive, or formally structured). If you’ve held your license for fewer than 24 months, only one (1) hour of ethics is required.

CE in Indiana is divided into Category I and Category II. You must complete at least 20 hours in Category I activities, such as workshops, conferences, or approved online courses. The remaining hours may be in Category II (e.g., self-study, journal reading, or informal activities).

Yes, our courses are accepted by the Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board for a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).

Indiana LMHC applicants generally need a qualifying master’s or doctoral degree in mental health counseling or a related field, including the required graduate coursework and clinical practicum/internship, followed by the required postgraduate supervised clinical experience. Applicants must also pass the NCMHCE and satisfy the Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board’s application and background-check requirements.

An LMHCA, or Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate, is the supervised license used while completing the postgraduate experience required for full LMHC licensure. Applicants who graduated after July 1, 2014 generally must hold the associate license before accruing Indiana postgraduate clinical hours that will count toward the LMHC license.

Indiana requires at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate clinical experience, including 100 hours of supervision. The supervised experience must be completed over at least 21 months and no more than 48 months.

Indiana requires the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) for full LMHC licensure. The NCE is accepted for the LMHCA associate license but is not considered equivalent to the NCMHCE for full Indiana LMHC licensure.

Indiana Behavioral Health and Human Services licenses expire on April 1 of even-numbered years and renew on a two-year cycle. LMHCs must satisfy the applicable CE requirements before renewing and are responsible for confirming that the renewal has been successfully processed.
