ACT in Exploration & Application: Uncloaking the 6 Tenets of Complete Healing

ACT in Exploration & Application: Uncloaking the 6 Tenets of Complete Healing

Date course created: June 2024

Incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy into your treatment approach will have a significant impact on your clinical effectiveness and the well-being of your clients. ACT is a rich, integrative approach, and has been shown to be effective for many clinically-relevant concerns. Because ACT takes a different perspective on psychotherapy, some clinicians wonder how to blend the applications into their own therapy approach. Other clinicians who have embraced the ACT concepts still have questions about certain aspects of the therapy.

This workshop will explain ACT in a very clear, concise, user-friendly manner. D.J. Moran, Ph.D., BCBA-D is a clinical psychologist who has been in the ACT community for over 25 years, has given ACT workshops all around the world, and is an ACBS Fellow and Recognized ACT trainer. He coauthored ACT in Practice, a book specifically written to teach clinicians how to actually use the therapeutic concepts in the therapy room. This “Demystifying ACT” workshop can be enjoyed by novices to the ACT material, and has additional elements that will be instructive for experienced ACT clinicians in the mental health field. Throughout this program, D.J. will help you gain conceptual and applied understanding of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This workshop will have experiential components, as well as group work and lecture material to assist you in learning:

  • The six domains of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Why acceptance is difficult for people, and what to do about it
  • How to make mindfulness specifically practical for clients
  • What to do when people are resistant to mindfulness exercises
  • How ACT relates to other empirically-supported therapies

Because ACT is helpful for many clinically-relevant concerns, case examples used throughout the day will include substance abuse, social phobia, OCD, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, anger management in executive coaching, and using a mindfulness-based approach to parenting children with childhood behavior disorders.

Live – Micro-Certificate in Full Cluster DSM-5 Personality Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment

Live – Micro-Certificate in Full Cluster DSM-5 Personality Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment

**This is a special 2-day, 12-CE didactic micro-certificate program resulting in a PD-PT(i)® post-nominal credential through Mind Works Professional Education, Inc. **

Most clinicians assume they don’t need to know how to work with personality disorders because “that’s not the population I treat.” With the U.S. about 4% higher than the global average, about 10% of the American population meets criteria for a DSM-5 Personality Disorder (WebMD, 2021). Many more, closer to 30-40% of individuals in the U.S. carry at least two or more common features of a personality disorder. Comorbidity rates in this population for other mental health concerns like anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control, and substance abuse are much higher at 20-50%. If you work with trauma or substance abuse, you’re likely seeing personality disorders in 60-90% of those patients. Since prognosis for individuals with PD’s is relatively poor (i.e. these features are generally regarded as “fixed”), it is that much more important for clinicians to learn how to work with common PD behaviors and cognitions in order to be effective in their work.

Personality disordered individuals are often considered to be some of the most difficult consumers of mental health services for therapists to treat effectively. Clearing the fog surrounding the different conditions and getting to the core of each individual client is vital to a successful treatment outcome. Drawing from the most recent literature, outcome trials, case studies and 20 years of clinical experience, Jeff Riggenbach, PhD will describe the latest evidence-based treatment options and show you how to avoid common pitfalls and therapeutic traps of these individuals who often leave clinicians feeling frustrated, stuck, and disheartened.

In this 2-day live and interactive micro-certification program, Jeff will describe each of the DSM-5 personality disorders and give you simple but effective engagement, management, and treatment techniques for each. Empirically supported strategies from DBT, CBT, and Schema Therapy will be incorporated into an integrated treatment approach that will transform the way your work with this challenging population. You will leave this experience not only with a new credibility marker, but most importantly you’ll leave feeling revitalized, hopeful, and more confident than ever to take on the hardest clients. Come away equipped with a new, comprehensive, empowering approach to assess, conceptualize, and treat this difficult population in a way that offers hope for clients and reinvigoration for providers. Live – Cognitive Tools to Melt Depression & Anxiety: Strategies That Really Work!

Live – Cognitive Tools to Melt Depression & Anxiety: Strategies That Really Work!

Depression and anxiety represent the two presenting concerns at the root of most clinical mental health cases, especially in the majority of outpatient settings. It is critical for all mental health providers to possess a deep and reliable toolset to meet the growing need nationwide for treatment of depression and anxiety. It can be argued there is none better proven than what you get with cognitive and behavioral approaches that can be used alongside your chosen therapeutic orientation. Versatile, evidence-based, and easy to implement!

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most empirically supported form of treatment for multiple psychiatric diagnoses and is widely considered the “gold standard” for treating a variety of problems encountered by consumers of behavioral health services. Most clinicians are familiar with standard CBT, but many practitioners in the trenches get “stuck” when following empirically supported protocol treating symptoms of depression and anxiety that seem to “hang on.” Leave this chock-full training not only with specific handouts, worksheets, and practical “tools,” but with a deeper schema-focused cognitive understanding of how to assess, conceptualize, and treat your clients with depression and anxiety that will transform the way that you work with your clients in your very next session!
