Clinically Interviewing Trauma Clients Without Retraumatization

Exposure to various forms of trauma and other life adversities are common among persons diagnosed with mental health and substance use disorders. As such, it is imperative for professionals to understand the impact trauma has on clients seeking services from mental health and substance use treatment programs. This 2-hour training is designed for professionals (particularly interviewers) working in mental health and substance use treatment settings who want enhance their interviewing practices through a trauma-informed framework. This training will examine the core principles of trauma-informed care and trauma-informed interviewing practices with the goal of improving the accuracy of information garnered during the interview process. By doing so, it is hoped that improved client outcomes will result.

Other topics discussed in this training include trauma symptoms and triggers, suggestibility, executive dysfunction, error monitoring deficits, uncertainty, language and communication impairments, auditory processing deficits, shame, sluggish cognitive tempo, comprehension deficits, fatigue, information processing deficits, choice-making deficits, empathy, abstract reasoning deficits, memory confusion, self-regulation deficits, and sensory processing limitations to name a few. Objectives:

This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:

a). Define trauma and other related terms and concepts.

b). State the key principles of trauma-informed care in a mental health setting.

c). Learn and describe trauma-related deficits and their impact on the clinical interviewing process.

d). Learn and describe ways to recognize when clients/interviewees are being triggered or exhibiting trauma reactions.

e). Identify and clinically utilize the latest research findings pertaining to trauma-informed care and trauma-informed interviewing.

Jerrod is also the founder and CEO of the American Institute for the Advancement of Forensic Studies (AIAFS) and the Editor-in-Chief of Forensic Scholars Today (FST). Jerrod has completed four separate master’s degree programs and holds graduate certificates in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Other Health Disabilities (OHD), and Traumatic-Brain Injuries (TBI).
