As awareness of neurodiversity continues to grow, clinicians are increasingly called to adapt evidence-based trauma treatments to better support neurodivergent clients. This training provides a comprehensive, neuro-affirming approach to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), integrating an understanding of ADHD, autism, and other neurotypes into trauma-informed care. Participants will explore how neurodiversity shapes identity, emotional regulation, executive functioning, and sensory processing.
The course highlights the connection between neurodiversity and trauma, including increased vulnerability due to adverse childhood experiences, microaggressions, and environmental mismatch. Using the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, clinicians will learn how trauma and neurodevelopmental differences interact, and how to conceptualize symptoms as adaptive responses rather than deficits.
Participants will gain practical strategies for adapting all eight phases of EMDR, including pacing, resourcing, bilateral stimulation, and assessment. Emphasis is placed on supporting executive functioning needs, accommodating sensory differences, and creating flexible, collaborative treatment environments that honor each client’s neurotype.
The training also introduces strengths-based cognitive interweaves that promote identity repair, reduce shame, and challenge internalized ableism. By the end of the course, clinicians will be better equipped to deliver EMDR in a way that is accessible, respectful, and effective for neurodiverse clients.
