Date course created: June 2024

The area of multicultural therapy practice around treating clients with disabilities is not given as much attention as it is with other marginalized groups of people. As the result of an increase in noncommunicable diseases and health conditions and an increase in the average human life span, the number of people with disabilities is increasing. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 1.2 million more people were reported as having a disability in 2021 when compared to 2020 data. No matter the specific population you work with, it is important for you to maintain competence in the area of culturally-informed practice when working with people who have disabilities.

This workshop is designed to help professionals gain a better understanding of the diverse needs of people with disabilities. Physical, sensorimotor and “hidden” disabilities will be the primary focus of this informative presentation.

Therapists will gain an understanding of: the complexity and diversity of people with disabilities, how to make your practice or facility accessible to people with disabilities, specific needs that people with disabilities may have, and therapeutic techniques and skills to meet the individual needs of a client with a disability.
