Requirements in ethics

Michigan applicants generally need a qualifying master’s or doctoral degree in counseling, an accepted counseling examination, required supervised post-degree counseling experience, a professional disclosure statement, and the other licensing requirements set by LARA. Applicants must also complete the required human-trafficking and implicit-bias training before licensure.
An LLPC, or Limited Licensed Professional Counselor, practices under the supervision of a fully licensed professional counselor while completing the experience required for full licensure. An LPC has completed Michigan’s education, examination, and supervised-experience requirements for full professional counselor licensure.
Applicants with a master’s degree need 3,000 hours of post-degree counseling experience over at least two years, including at least 100 hours of qualifying supervision. Applicants with a doctoral counseling degree need 1,500 hours over at least one year, including at least 50 hours of qualifying supervision.
Michigan accepts qualifying scores from the National Counselor Examination (NCE), National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE), or Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) examination. Applicants only need to submit scores from one accepted testing organization.
A Michigan professional counselor license has a three-year renewal cycle. Licensees can generally begin the renewal process about 90 days before the license expiration date through the state’s online licensing system.
