The global pandemic of COVID-19 has coincided with increasing reports of individuals suffering from a variety of sleep-related disturbances (e.g., insomnia, hypersomnia, night terrors). This potential escalation in the incidence of sleep-related disturbances emphasizes the need for greater awareness of this topic among professionals working within various helping professions (e.g., mental health professionals, drug and alcohol treatment counselors, telehealth providers, and other related fields). Specifically, professionals working within these settings should understand the complexities of sleep-related disturbances and their impact on a client’s emotional, behavioral, and physical health functioning. Grounded in the available research literature on sleep disturbances and global pandemics like COVID-19, this training (a) identifies possible causes and associated consequences of sleep disturbances, and (b) reviews screening and intervention options appropriate for clients directly and indirectly impacted by COVID-19. Case studies and professional observations will be highlighted throughout this training to enhance the learning outcomes of attendees.
