The global pandemic of COVID-19 has coincided with increasing reports of individuals suffering from a variety of sleep-related disturbances (e.g., insomnia, hypersomnia, night terrors). This potential escalation in the incidence of sleep-related disturbances emphasizes the need for greater awareness of this topic among professionals working within various helping professions (e.g., mental health professionals, drug and alcohol treatment counselors, telehealth providers, and other related fields). Specifically, professionals working within these settings should understand the complexities of sleep-related disturbances and their impact on a client’s emotional, behavioral, and physical health functioning. Grounded in the available research literature on sleep disturbances and global pandemics like COVID-19, this training (a) identifies possible causes and associated consequences of sleep disturbances, and (b) reviews screening and intervention options appropriate for clients directly and indirectly impacted by COVID-19. Case studies and professional observations will be highlighted throughout this training to enhance the learning outcomes of attendees.

Objectives:

This training will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:

a). Review existing empirically based literature examining the role COVID-19-related isolation, stress, anxiety, and worry play in the development of sleep disturbances and disorders.

b). Develop a working understanding of sleep disturbances and disorders.

c). Explore the role of co-occurring conditions including trauma, substance use, and other psychiatric disorders among client populations impacted by sleep-related disturbances.

d). Describe appropriate screening and intervention options for clients impacted by sleep-related disturbances and disorders.

Target Audience:

Psychologists, social workers, drug and alcohol counselors, marriage and family therapists, telehealth treatment professionals, and other clinical mental health professionals.
